Description

Pilgrim People – Lough Derg Mass CD
This CD is a collection of music celebrating the Irish tradition in prayer and pilgrimage. Some of the pieces are taken from other longer works and are influenced by various people and places. Heavens Door celebrates the great monastic tradition of Jerpoint Abbey in Kilkenny. The Plains of the Oak is a dance piece from a work called Brigid of Kildare, while Journey of a Soul was written for the visit of Therese of Liseaux to our shores. The haunting tones of Betrayal are from the poignant story of Irelands national saint Patrick, taken from the work The Shepherd Boy. Paidir no Trinoide is an eleventh-century prayer and is from the work Malaise, based on the life of St Lazerian, the founder of the first Christian settlement in south Leinster.

Performing with Liam Lawton on these tracks are the musicians and singers of Lorica – Madeleine Doherty, Anne Cullen, Michael Connolly, Dave Carugo, Ger Maloney, Marian Gaynor, Brian Morissey, Liam OConnor, Tom OReilly, Tim Fouhy, Liam Enright, Karen ODonovan, Nuala Kelly and Louise Irvine.

Lough Derg Mass was commissioned for use at that great place of pilgrimage in Donegal and celebrates, in true Irish style, the song of the Celtic soul, the prayer of the pilgrim. It was also the Mass setting used in a special Eurovision Broadcast by RTE on Easter Sunday 2003 from The Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow. Participating in this broadcast were Carlow Cathedral Parish Choirs, Carlow Cathedral Music Ensemble, Cormiosa and Carlow Young Artists Choir. The organist was Tim Fouhy and Musical Director for the broadcast was Marian Gaynor.
