Description
Jim Conroy, editor of Catholic Education Inside Out, Outside In, is currently Head of the Department of Religious Education at the University of Glasgow. This collection of essays represents a conversation between academics working from within the Catholic tradition looking at the place of Catholic history, culture and thought and colleagues looking in from without that tradition. In the sense that it has generated a real and robust conversation between those who are advocates of Catholic education and those who are “friendly” critics it is unique.
Now widely reviewed in both the popular press and academic journals it has received substantial critical acclaim as offering thoughtful and provocative reflection and discussion which goes far beyond the concerns of Catholic education narrowly conceived.
“As editor I was concerned to generate a book which educationalists and others outside the Catholic tradition could pick up and immediately recognise that many of their own concerns reflected in the discussion here. This seems to have been successful; for example, David Hay (Reader in Spiritual education at the University of Nottingham) has this to say in a review in the Journal of Moral Education 28:4;- The standard is high, occasionally superb. It is a great relief to come across such a gust of fresh air in the eucational world, where technical reason has come to dominate our purposes to an extreme degree”.
Contibutors range over a variety of disciplines and backgrounds: psychologists (James Day-Louvain-La-Neuve), religious educationalists (John Hull – University of Birmingham), philosophers (John Haldane- St. Andrews) educationalists (Joe OKeefe – Georgetown and Boston College), and musicians (James MacMillan-internationally renowned Scottish composer and conductor). If you are interested in taking a fresh look at some serious educational questions this may well be the book for you.
